Plow the Sky
I spent a good portion of this day at the high school campus that is adjacent to our community college (John F. Kennedy Middle College High School is its official name) because some of us from the college English department were joining with dozens of high school English teachers to read essays written by high school seniors.
Mostly we are trying to develop relationships with these high school teachers so that all of us together can better understand the students and possibly find ways to assist them with their writing skills.
As I had a few minutes to speak with a half-dozen of them from one high school, we all agreed that it isn't their writing skills or even their reading skills that they are having trouble with, it is their motivation that wanes terribly. Students don't want to write and they don't want to read; mostly they want to be "playing" on their phones.
I'm not sure that any of us know how to solve this dilemma because we all know that their phones are NOT going away. Something, though, is terribly wrong.
Good night from what sometimes seems like the land of desperation,
but is really Southern California.
