Boat Yard

Concluded on Mallaig job today.

The boat yard was just next to our site and I got talking to a young engineer there about fishing quotas, time allowed for boats at sea and how it affected their workload and business. Its always interesting to get a take on how other folk are getting on at work and how the decisions of very remote politicians can have far reaching consequences on entire communities. He explained it in great detail to me, including the strange geographic variations and how it could be abused by boats from distant ports, which in truth I couldn't get my head around. Thankfully his yard still seems to have a good flow of work.

A few minutes earlier the Barra lifeboat had been returned to the water after some bi-annual maintenance. It, and the Mallaig counterpart, are impressive vessels. Information overload today; twin turbocharged diesel engines each producing 1250 HP of marine engine thrusting power, Mallaig to Barra in about three hours and you really don't want to know about the fuel economy.

Anyway I asked if I could take this picture. (If you have time please hit L for larger)
