Fairies in the garden?
I don’t know about you, but I could never tell my mushrooms from my toadstools. Maybe that’s why I keep peeking into the garden every night, just hoping to catch a glimpse of the fairies dancing by these monsters on the lawn.
Don’t get me wrong, as a food I just love mushrooms, and I couldn’t wish for a better filling for a tasty omelette. But when it comes to foraging for mushrooms in the wild, that’s another matter.
I recall many years ago buying mushrooms in a delicatessen and taking them home to the aunt with whom I was staying while on holiday at the time. She was horrified that I was contemplating eating them! Of course, they were delightful.
But maybe that is at the root of my reluctance to go foraging for wild mushrooms locally, and I know there are plenty to be found this time of year, of the safe edible varieties, not more than a mile or two from home. I really do not know which type of fungi I could safely pick and enjoy for a heartwarming breakfast.
Perhaps I shall play it safe and wait for my fairies to arrive by these on the lawn.
