It takes 5 hours on the train from Athens to Greece. We passed a lot of fields where cotton was growing.
A mile or so walking uphill from the station to Kastraki, and after a rest in our hotel we went out on an exploratory walk up a small hill to get a view of the amazing rock formations. I read that they were once below the sea! Monks once lived a contemplative life in caves on the side of the rocks, and then built monasteries on the top of them, some of which are still in existence today.
We had a lovely dinner at a taverna - bread, olives, giant beans and lots of healthy vegetable dishes all washed down with local red wine.
Then another walk up to the pinnacle which you might be able to see in the middle of the photo. Sarah climbed up part of it :-)
We will be visiting the monasteries tomorrow.
