Bungee Jumping

The main work of the Israeli evolutionary biologist Amotz Zahavi, concerned the evolution of signals, particularly those signals that are indicative of fitness, and their selection for "honesty". Where Charles Darwin reckoned the display of the peacock was to attract females with his handsome plume, Zahavi suggests the peacock is showing how strong he is, a weak colleague wouldn’t have the strength to raise his feathers.

His hypothesis is known as the “Handicap Principle” and suggests “signals must be costly if it is to accurately advertise a trait of relevance to an individual with conflicting interests”. In human terms, Bungee Jumping may be seen as such a signal.

I made a great decision today to have a late snack lunch sitting in front of the TV watching Sky News and seeing live, Mrs May deliver her post-Salzburg speech. The event will go down in the English history books. Won’t make the European history books as it was only aimed at her own revolting tribe and designed to save her political life.

I can’t see how things can get any worse.

After a day of doing bits and pieces including getting more sugar to the bees after the second varroa mite treatment, Luna and I did an evening walk around the “Schickling walk” in Ottobeuren. We have to cross three narrow bridges and sometimes like today, also take a swim. The weather had just started to break down after another lovely hot day. It drizzled for most of the walk and the wind was getting up. I’m not sure which storm’s outer edges are brushing us here in the south. It is known as “Elena” here and I think maybe the remains of the  US tropical storm “Helene”  which the UK didn’t bother to name simply accepting the US name. So if the Uk didn’t blindly follow the US  it should have been named  “Bronagh”. It’s too confusing – was that last big storm “Ali” from the Muslim Middle East?

Perhaps we Europeans should have one naming system – sounds like an important task for the EU as they twiddle their thumbs waiting for something to happen to warrant a bit of thought and  work.

Storm “Fabienne” is on its way to hit us harder on Sunday. Now looks like the smaller opening parade at the Oktoberfest on Saturday will be OK and with luck, the huge Sunday morning one may just get done before the wind arrives. Being bridge builders, the German weather “frogs”  like to use European names, The French seemingly borrowing the Italian “Fabius” and turning it into a diminutive form meaning “Small Cute Bean”. The UK could name it Rowan or “Mr Bean”.
