Old canal warehouse at Cheapside

I was driving home when I suddenly thought I should go down to the canal and photograph the old canal-side warehouse at Cheapside close to Stroud station. I have photographed it many times over the years but sadly while we were away in Spain a few weeks ago it was set on fire by two vandals. It is a listed building that we at Stroud Preservation Trust have been keeping an eye on, and following with great interest the proposed development of new housing on the site where it stands. 

The canal through Stroud town centre has been regenerated in the last few years and this former coalyard close to the railway is a key development site highlighted in the town centre Neighbourhood Development Plan. It has planning permission and the warehouse was going to be converted into office space. The developers have now publicly said that following the fire, where the whole roof was lost, the viability of the development is now threatened.

One on the other trustees said that actually the roof was absent in a photo from the 1920s, so possibly the building will still be stable. I took some pictures for the photo record I am keeping of the town centre and to send to the trustees to show the damage.

I have just heard the sad news that SarumStroller has passed away. It has been suggested that we honour him by tagging pictures we think he would have liked. We had several correspondences about 'Derelict' subjects, so I feel the discovery of the fire damage to this building would be something he'd appreciate.
