Combat de Reines (“queen fights”)

A very interesting Sunday! We were unsure about attending the local cow fighting event, but decided that we should go, and could always leave quickly if it was horrible. However, turned out to be more cow pushing than fighting so we stayed to watch and learn. Combat de Reines is a traditionally Swiss pastime, using Herens cows with their horns blunted. They naturally fight for dominance in the herd and this is exploited in the cow fighting. The cows go into the ring 10 at a time and choose whether or not to engage (some just ate grass the whole time!). Those that do fight, do so until one backs down and is taken out of the ring. This continues until one cow is left - La Reine Des Reines. Great event, no cows hurt in any way and the most beautiful mountain backdrop.
