Whoopers
Day 1 of our 4 night exploration of Dumfries and Galloway. We are exploring as part of the planning for a longer holiday with friends next May.
An early start and such a pleasure driving north on the M6 on a Sunday morning. Still like motorways were when they first opened.
First stop was Caerlaverick a reserve of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust. We were hoping that the thousands of Barnacle Geese which overwinter there might have started to arrive. But we are a little early. We will have another look on the way home later in the week.
Then to the RSPB reserve at Mersehead.
Here were just two Whooper Swans, one of which is pictured above. They had just arrived we were told.
Finally to our first hotel. It is situated on the edge of a Forestry Commision Woodland with several marked trails. A first stroll in there before dinner. Perhaps I will go out there before breakfast to look for fungi.
An unexpectedly sunny day with light winds and temperatures good for walking. A most enjoyable day.
Wi fi is tricky so forgive me if there are not as many comments as usual.
