Passing the torch
Bajo Salario played at a concert to benefit workshops on "Know Your Rights" for immigrants, run by the American Friends Service Committee. Lead singer Maria Damaris introduced her 13-year-old daughter as the newest member of the group. Maria whispered suggestions and encouragement to her daughter several times during their much-too-short set, and I loved watching the mentoring process right in front of our eyes.
I found the concert overall frustrating. There were three soloists, only one of whom was worth the effort. Between each musician there was (too much) talk, including a power point presentation that failed to advance, as they do so often, and that took an endless amount of time. There was an intermission that lasted nearly half an hour instead of 15 minutes. The program planners saved Bajo Salario for the finale, which would have been great, but the failure of the soloists and the talkers to pay attention to the time, plus the lengthy intermission, meant that after we waited for what seemed an eternity to hear the main act, their time was cut to ten minutes because the venue had to be cleared on time. Grrrrrr....
