Lock 29

Today’s the day .................... to go up

If you are going to take a narrowboat over the Pennines, it is an absolute certainty that you are going to be faced with a multitude of locks that will first of all take you up – and then another load that will bring you back down again.

This is the view from the front of the boat in a going-up lock.  You start off at the lowest level in the lock.  The gates are closed – and then the paddles in the lock gates are opened up to let the water in.  The boat rises up with the water until the levels are the same.  The gates can then be opened and the boat can motor on at the new level.

Simple really .....................
