The Sunnies

Today it was all about Sun Bears. This morning we anaesthetised
Arkte for a full health check and to have a hormonal implant placed, which we are really hoping will help with her phsycotic episodes rapid mood swings. She is definitely a bear that will find the weakness of another and then target that weakness. Unfortunately it often results in lots of chasing and agression - particularly with poor sensitive Nelson. Once anaesthetised we discovered she had quite a badly infected, rotting, fractured canine tooth (her last one), so we removed that and a couple of other problem teeth too. It's hard to know whether this sore tooth has been the cause of her grumpiness lately or if her general grumpiness was the cause of the fracture (from one too many scuffles). Sadly she may soon be more of a gummy bear than a sun bear!

In the afternoon on my way back from putting on the laundry I walked past the sun bear enclosure and was delighted to see David and Nelson (looking anything but sensitive in this shot!) playing and wrestling. The sun bears have quite a bit of excess skin but David's skin rolls are just a wee bit, um, excessive. Nelson likes to take full advantage of David's extra rolls - they're good for holding onto with one's mouth apparently!

LARGE is best for more rolls!
