Holbrook to Flagstaff, AZ
Great breakfast at the Globe trotter and was sad to leave the room which was just so comfy and homely, our best room of the trip so far
9am start and first stop was the Jack Rabbit trading post - a Route 66 staple. We managed to buy a couple of gifts here and get a photo of the famous sign.
Next stop was Winslow which I was excited about - see additional photo, ‘standing on a corner’. We had a little walk around Winslow including the Posada hotel which was beautiful but not affordable for us on this trip sadly
Next stop, Meteor Crater. A 50,000 crater that had been seen in various films including Thor and Starman. However they don’t really advertise that and the discovery centre and introductory video are pretty basic and not very informative. The meter crater itself is pretty impressive but hard to capture the scale in photograph- see additional photo 2
After eating our salad in the car looking over the Arizonian desert, we set off for Flagstaff. The scenery quickly changed from desert to forest as we entered Flagstaff.
Luckily our hotel let us check in a little early so we would dump the bags and freshen up. My main aim for the rest of the day was to do a side trip to Sedona and I’m really glad we did it. Sedona is a few miles south of Flagstaff and a bit of a tourist town. Apparently there are many vortexes in the area. Not sure what the are but it’s like hippy healing stuff. Anyway the town of Sedona is great with tonnes of interesting shops. The views of the red mountains are incredible though and you can actually see why people might find a spiritual connection here. We drove further down to see the Chirch of the holy Cross - literally built into the mountain. Very impressive and magnificent views from there.
We decided to have dinner in Sedona and chose a grill where I nearly burst with the amount I ate and only got 2 slices in to my pizza. It was also a brewery so we were obliged to sample them all - we got a flight of 7 tiny beers each. All in all a worthy stop.
Back to Flagstaff the sun was setting and the rocks lit up bright red- as in the picture which was just taken on the iPhone. Truly magical. We were back in the hotel relatively early so we watched movies before sleep.
Roadkill count: 2 Giant hares, 2 skunks, 1 critter.
