The gate to nowhere
This old gate is on Craigleith Crescent just at the entrance to the cycle track. It marks what used to be the back entrance to the Windmill Garage which stood on the site of the current Esso Service Station, still known as the Windmill, especially to older locals. I presume the old Windmill had mechanics and did repairs as well as just selling petrol. I do remember it being here when I was growing up. The old garage predates the Holiday Inn which is also on this site.
The steps down to the cycle track here mark the entrance to the old Blackhall / Craigleith railway station, which closed in 1962. There are lots of these abandoned stations around Edinburgh where the only thing left of the station is the old platform running along the side of the cycle track which is on the route of the old railway. A little further south, the path runs through the old Roseburn Station and I do remember using the Station at Corstorphine occasionally when I was coming home from secondary school.
Good that the track still has a use, but the suburban railway would also have been very useful - thanks Dr Beeching.
