A Slight Return
On the 2nd of this month A, Jack and I set off on a round of the the highest of the Moorfoot Hills. The weather was fairly nice when we set off and fairly nice when we returned. Sadly, inbetwixt, the weather was surprisingly horrendous. So bad that we abandoned the walk after reaching the first summit (and Trig Pillar - we're Trig baggers! Google it).
Nonetheless, it was Jack's highest summit (as far as we know - he's a second-hand dug from Wales but, surmising from his history, we doubt he's been up more than a flight of stairs).
Today we went back to complete the round. But, for variety, we did it in the opposite direction. I'd forgotten that there was another Trig Pillar (on Dundreich) so that was a bonus.
The route took us through the Bowbeat Wind Farm (which was once Scotlands most powerful) and we were terrified by a fearsome roar from one of the turbines as we passed beneath it! It turned out that there were engineers on site and in order to shut a turbine down the blade tips are rotated 90° so they act as brakes. This makes the terrifying roar as the blade tips are travelling at about 160mph!
We could have headed off the hills after the wind farm but that would have involved a long "off-piste" trudge through heather and bog so we continued the round to pass over the summit (and Trig!) of Blackhope Scar.
It was a brilliant day with amazing views to familiar hills!
Despite his eleven mile, multi-hill "walkie" Jack was still keen to chase a ball till we all hit the hay.
We all slept well.
