Chesil Beach

We climbed to the top of Chesil Beach this afternoon. This amazing geographical feature dominates the coast of this part of Dorset. It is 18 miles long, 650 feet wide and 50 feet high. It was quite a challenge scrambling up through the pebbles to the top. We were at the Eastern end near Portland Bill. I remember learning at school that the pebbles are the largest at the eastern end and gradually get smaller as you go west. The lagoon behind the huge bank shelters a wide variety of wildlife. See second extra.
Earlier we had visited Nothe Fort, a solid structure that has defended Weymouth for more than 200 years. Normous enjoyed seeing all the different types of cannons. See extra.
