Karen, Joanne and Chaucer in Canterbury
I was awake early...I’d had dreams about spiders and missing the train. We were heading to Cambridge railway station with Neil as our chauffeur by 8.15 and met Joanne. 3 trains later, we arrived in Canterbury at about midday. We proceeded through the main high street, very busy with people, and out the other side, to our weekend apartment. There we had our lunch, and chatted...for quite a long while actually!
At about 3.40 we took a walk back into the city, window shopping in the town, then out into some backstreets, along by the river, into so lovely gardens, and ending up at 6pm in a pub/restaurant where we had dinner.
A leisurely walk back via the cathedral. It is heavily cloaked in scaffolding and when we passed the entrance on our outward journey we glanced in. There was a barrier and a sign wanting £12.50 to enter. We chose to give it a miss, but on our way back, in the dark, the cathedral close was open so we went in and walked all round. I’m sure it is very impressive inside, but it seems a lot of money. I feel like a cathedral is like any other church and should belong to everyone. In Norwich cathedral they ask for a donation, but do not force you. It is open to everyone at any time. It’s a shame, as I like to look inside cathedrals. Perhaps I will come back when the scaffolding has all gone, and then view it inside and out.
So a nice day to start our girls weekend. The apartment is very clean and new, and beautifully furnished. Tomorrow there is a bit of rain forecast. We might just stay in and chat....
