Day of German Unity

It's great to be teaching German on a historic day like today and to have the occasion/excuse to talk a wee bit about the history of division and reunification. When I started teaching in 1999 the pupils had a chance of knowing something about Germany's history - East Vs West, communism Vs democracy, the Berlin Wall. Now, unless parents have an interest and have discussed it with them, pupils are unlikely to know anything at all. Today I told stories they'd never heard before and it felt important and exciting.
