Polishing off the apples

On an extremely wet, cold, and dripping morning, our frequent squirrel visitor was making the most of the last of the apples which have not yet fallen from the tree.
He cannot access the bird feeders and it amuses me to see him try!
This means the small birds can feed in comfort. The coal tits have been busy taking sunflower seeds and then hiding them in cracks in our garage wall or other crevices. They were most likely responsible for the sunflower that sprang up in amongst the cotoneaster horizontalis which clings to the garage wall. It is so thick that the blackbirds nested there one spring.
The goldfinches are about too.
Our resident garden robin has been warding off an interloper with his display of being fierce! They are vigorously protective of their territories.
I am going to hunker down with my French novel. Quiet space in a busy week.
