Night at the Museum
My favourite building in Oxford is the Natural History Museum and not only is it a wonderful building but it also has a full size T-Rex skeleton (and lots of other dinosaur skeletons).
Tonight was Lights Night in Oxford, at some point the Christmas lights were switched on and the streets were packed whilst a procession of lanterns marched through the city, but this being Oxford the focus was on the buildings rather than shopping.
We started in the Natural History Museum where it seemed I was bumping into friends and aquantainces every few minutes - Oxford is very small! In the upstairs bar I found Bundle fresh from her Blipmeet in Spain. Then we popped down to the Bodleian Library for a brief tour through the Convocation House and much discussion about what a 'convocation' actually is.... before the T Rex lured us back up the road.
There's something magical about sipping wine amongst the bones of creatures that roamed the earth centuries ago. We got tickets for a torchlight exploration of the Pitt Rivers Museum which is accessed through a door at the back and where the cabinets are sorted by theme. 'Methods of dealing with Dead Enemies' is one of the most gruesome.... including the shrunken heads.
The Natural History Museum is due to close for a year for repairs and cleaning of the roof, so if you've never been there go soon as it is the most marvellous building with an extraordinary collection.
