The Plain Table

Another Saturday spent in the truck driving to Timaru and back meant some more fantastic mountain views both on the outward and return trip.

On the way down I headed down the inland route via Thompson's Track to Geraldine. It's a great time of year to be crossing the bridges over the Rakaia, Ashburton and Rangitata rivers - the combination of vibrant yellow lupins and the deep sapphire snowmelt waters are something to behold.

Unfortunately time restraints and lack of pedestrian opportunities over the braided rivers meant that my blipping was curtailed, but on the way home we did get an evening stop by the plain table just outside Chertsey. This shows the skyline of the Southern Alps from the view point, pointing out (left to right) Mt Peel, Mt Cook, Mt D'Archiac, Mt Somers, Mt Taylor, and Mt Hutt.

The rest of the drive was under a magnificent Canterbury sunset, culminating in the sun dipping to the horizon just as we rounded Sunset Point on the Akaroa Highway. It's a shame I can only load one image...
