Duomo, Firenze
Slightly cliched shot of the famous Florence Duomo. We walked up 414 steps of the adjacent bell tower to take in the view and picture, after earlier completing 463 steps to reach the viewing terrace of the Duomo. This makes it my shot of the day for that reason alone.
Completing the dome took a remarkably rapid 16 years (the rest of the impressive cathedral was built over 124 years). Completing the dome was a major technical problem and represented a massive breakthrough in technology, as nothing anywhere near this size had been built in the early 1400s. It’s still the largest dome in Europe and a mind boggling feat without any kind of power.
