Primal Scream - I'll Be There For You (Original Memphis Recording version)(recorded June-July 1993, Ardent Studios, Memphis)
When Primal Scream's album Give Out But Don't Give Up was released in 1994 it was considerably different from the one Tom Dowd had produced for them in Memphis. Having been rejected by Creation label owner Alan McGee, some tracks had then been remixed by George Drakoulis and another completely remade by him. Others had been remixed by George Clinton or Brendan Lynch, and reception of the album was mixed. Along the way the original concept for the album had been lost. A couple of years ago the original Memphis masters were rediscovered and a new version of the album, subtitled The Original Memphis Recordings, was released on this day, and my own pre-ordered copy arrived.
One track, I'll Be There For You, appeared to be missing, but on further examination turned out to have been renamed Jesus. I believe Jesus, which turned up on a B-side in 1997, used the same melody and tempo, but having compared the two lyrics there is no commonality between them and so the retitling is a puzzle, and I have reverted to the original title. The new version of the album, recorded live in the studio with the Swampers rhythm section from Muscle Shoals, shows they did achieve what they set out to do and contains some of Bobby Gillespie's best vocals.
