Temperature Inversion

We live on the side of a hill with views towards the Welsh hills, Shropshire and the border area. On rare occasions we get to see a temperature inversion where cooler a layer of cool air is trapped by a layer of warmer air. Under normal circumstances air temperature decreases as altitude increases.

This is one of the best examples I have seen here although the photograph doesn't really do it justice. In the far distance you can see the Welsh hills. In  between there and the sandstone ridge where we are you can see cloud although it looks like the sea. Across the middle of the picture you can see the tops of the trees poking out above the cloud. I suspect that this line marks the A51 between Tarvin and Tarporley.
