Memorial
I had time to spare in Edinburgh before meeting friends for lunch. I decided to have a wander in Princes Street Gardens which is temporarily free of the paraphernalia of any of the Edinburgh Festivals. Given my voluntary activity in the garden of the artist Ian Hamilton-Findlay, I decided to seek out his memorial for Robert Louis Stevenson. It takes the form of a copse of birch trees which surrounds a headstone. Engraved on the headstone are the dates of Stevenson’s life. At the top are inscribed the words ‘Man of Letters’ and beneath it - R.L.S.
Made me smile.
