Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is in the middle nowhere which means it gets pretty dark at night. There's an observatory on Mount John that is one of the best places to observe the night sky in the southern hemisphere.

The day was cloudy so we didn't go up the observatory at night as it didn't look that promising, but the sky cleared gradually as the evening went on to reveal a carpet of stars.

I took this photo just as it was getting really dark, it's not really that sharp and is very noisy so doesn't do it justice at all, an hour later there were a lot more stars too.
