Fifth Time Lucky
After three failed attempts at the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, and one off of Vancouver Island, I finally got to see whales at sea today at Eden in New South Wales. We saw at least 10 humpback whales, mainly mothers with calves. We say lots of fluke-slapping and a baby whale gave us a lovely show of jumping out the water and back in again.
We followed up with a trip to the Eden killer Whale museum to find out about Old Tom, and how Killer Whales helped whalers in the 19th and 20th century to trap whales for harpooning.
We finished up with a fantastic dinner of oysters and seared tuna at Snug Cove. A fantastic day that has made the year for someone who has yearned to see whales in the wild since I was 13.
