In other technology issues.... my laptop is working again. The Edgware Road PC repair man felt it was a motherboard issue that would need manufacturer attention, so I took it back to PC World in Charlton where I was also about to buy a new one. However the "Know How guy" got it working, saying it was a Windows update issue (duplicated updates confused the operating system, he said).
