Walking in the footsteps of the Romans.

Old friends visited us today. It was a bonny autumn afternoon, so we’d a walk in the park. The Antonine Wall runs along the northern boundary of the park. Built by Antonius Pius AD 142-43, it formed northern frontier of the Roman Empire. To the north lies Caledonia. The ladies are walking on the Antonine Wall itself - this is an earth mounded bank built on blockwork foundations, although in some places it simply used natural features. To the north (their left), and out of shot below the trees, lies a deep excavated ditch; it in turn is mounded on its north side with the excavated material. History suggests the southern mounded Wall where they’re walking was topped by palisade fencing, and a Roman Military Way ran along the 39 mile length of the fortification. There are various crossings through the wall and several forts; good examples nearby are Roughcastle and Kinneil.
