Chestnuts
"Oh No! - not that old chestnut again"
We know that Xmas is rapidly approaching when the shops start selling Xmas Trees (won't all the needles drop off?) and then M starts peeling her chestnuts! Well, we might not have a kitchen at Xmas so we have to prepare early this year.
According to my copy of the "Photography: A Guardian Masterclass" I am calling this a modernist still life picture in the style of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It does not quite match up to his "Basket of Fruit, (1599) exhibited in the Ambrosiana Gallery in Milan perhaps but it is a very still life all the same. Apparently, Still Life painting was despised by the "Elite". This picture therefore makes me very happy indeed.
Anything I can do to be despised by the "Elite" must be a good thing; my logic being that most "Elites" are evil, psychopathic or bad, therefore I must be doing something opposite, ergo I am good !!
So, is this really a metaphysical exploration of reality and a profound art form? Or is it a simple picture of some chestnuts ready to be made into stuffing? It depends whether you are competing for the Turner prize I suppose.
This Still Life thing could be fun, especially if I take more photographs of the current Newcastle team. Now there really is an example of Still Life in action (an oxymoron that one!)
I will see if I can work through all the chapters of the Photography guide. A picture inspired by Caravaggio must be a good start. :)
