Shelter From The Storm

As the storm rages
and the waters rise
a small creature
finds its way
into your home.

It doesn't realise
it's in the cupboard
under the stairs
where the crisps are
though it soon
discovers them.

Lifesaving food.

You discover them.
Little tears
in several packets.
Crisps spilling out.

So, a little creature,
relatively harmless,
but eating your food
without asking.

Do you set a trap?
Tempt it
with a tiny morsel?
Break its neck?

Or do you
let it continue
to feast on your crop?

But what if it returns
with its friends
and you end up
with a cupboard
full of them,
all devouring your stuff?

I'm in two minds
but I fear
the breaking the neck plan,
though understandable,
is a bit like
pouring water
on a drowning man.
