Mugdock Castle
When we lived nearby, a favourite place to visit was Mugdock Castle. In winter we walked beside carpets of snowdrops and in summer had picnics and felt as if we were miles from Glasgow. The children used to enjoy playing hide and seek among the ruins and few people would be around. Now it is popular since it became part of Mugdock Country Park in 1989 and ‘tidied up’. Despite the cool dank weather this afternoon it seemed very busy considering it was not the weekend.
The tower was one of four and records state that it already existed in 1372. It was attacked several times and later a house was built adjacent. This was demolished and replaced by a large mansion in 1874 with a passage linking the house to the tower. Until 1948 it was inhabited but then destroyed by fire and demolished in 1967. The rubble has been cleared away since we used to visit and remains of the laundry and kitchen can now be seen, including this old cooking range (extra) just behind the brick wall.
