Autumn sunbather

Alex was working in the south part of Peterborough today, so after I'd dropped him off I went to King's Dyke NR for a walk. After yesterday's dankness, today was sunny from dawn till dusk, and it was great to feel the warmth of the sun's rays. This Common Darter clearly had much the same feeling, and was one of several basking on a sheltered sunny gate.

I'd hoped to see some of the interesting birds that have been spotted at the site recently, but it was remarkably quiet. Redwings and fieldfares lurked in the scrub, and in the distance a young marsh harrier was quartering the reeds.

However, I did flush a woodcock from an area of scrub at the top of the reserve, and caught a glimpse of it's russet plumage and long beak as it erupted in front of me. It's the second one I've flushed this week, and must be part of an influx from the continent.

In the evening we all went along to a bonfire and firework display at Castor village - a well-organised event with a very friendly vibe. I'd not been before, but was impressed by the quality of the fireworks - perhaps not quite as thunderous and showy as the main Peterborough display, but very good value for money! I think this might become a tradition...
