Memorial thistle
100 years ago today Thomas Campbell died in France just a few days before the end of WW1. Today a thistle was carried across the Nungate Bridge from the site of his parents’ home to the Memorial Fence in West Park in Haddington accompanied by a piper and the burgh flag. (extra)
Throughout the last year those soldiers mentioned on Haddington’s war memorial have had a hand crafted thistle attached to the Memorial Fence in the town’s West Park on the date that they died. A relative or volunteer carries the thistle from the last known address if possible to the park. Yesterday a thistle was added for Henry Bradford who died on 5th November 1914. Today there are now 129 hand crafted thistles and the 130th will be put on next Sunday with the 131st, a large thistle, added to represent those who died but are not on the town’s war memorial.
