The Light of Remembrance

I tried my best with my compact camera to photograph the sunlight streaming down on the knitted poppies around a tree near the war memorial in Higham Ferrers. The shafts of sunlight on the poppies in reality was quite striking. I was there to meet 4 friends that I worked with in Finance in Abbey National over 20 years ago. It was lovely to have a catch up with them over a nice meal.

The following poem is well known, but often only a couple of lines are quoted, so I thought I'd include the whole poem on this centenary weekend.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
