On a brilliant blue morning I was in Nelson to see the commemorations for the end of World War 1. At the top of Trafalgar Street on the Cathedral steps a display of flax poppies was being assembled. They had been made by school children, older folks, a weaving group and many others I'm sure. I was told there were 3,600 to represent the men and women from the Nelson Province who served. In the extra a woman is attaching some and you can seen the variety of patterns used to create the poppies. Flax is widely grown in New Zealand and children learn to weave flowers using strips of flax. I think having flax poppies instead of red poppies will make the Nelson display unique.
