Remembrance
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him.
From "The Minstrel Boy" an Irish patriotic song written by Thomas Moore (1779–1852) who set it to the melody of The Moreen, an old Irish air.
The Minstrel Boy became a popular song among the Irish soldiers who fought in the American Civil War and, later, in World War I. At today’s Remembrance ceremony at the Cenotaph the musical programme, which has remained unchanged since 1930, included the Minstrel Boy.
The poppy in the photograph is a crystal sand-cast, designed by Sarah Peterson and made by Caithness Glass, to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War.
