High Steeet, Poole - seen from on high

The northern end of Poole's High Street is a pedestrian area, albeit one which includes a level crossing running through the major railway line running from Waterloo to Weymouth.

The gates of the railway crossing are raised here, as indicated the vertical red-and-white checkered gates.

The square in the foreground was named - using a large plaque in its middle - Falkland Square in the 1980s, to commemorate all participants in the 1982 Falklands War.  The significance of this name is the participation in the war of the Royal Marines and SBS (Special Boat Squadron) which has a major base in Poole.

If you are curious about my viewpoint for this photo, it was on top of one of the car parks in the Dolphin Shopping Centre (originally the Arnedale Centre).
