Personal remembrance
My father was in the army during the 14-18 war. He used to send lots of these embroidered cards to my mother as they had only been married a short time. They were used to decorate a large fire screen which stood in front of our large black range during the summer months. As a child I used to sit and admire all of them behind their glass. When the screen was finally broken up my sister and I chose a few cards each to keep. I now only have this one, kept because it still has the original card inside. Looking a little the worse for wear.
My brother served in the 39-45 war so my mother had to cope with a loved one fighting again.
We were fortunate that both survived, some families were not.
