First Fleeter

If you live by Sydney Harbour, transport to and from work, to and from entertainment, shopping or restaurants is usually by ferry. You can be three quarters of an hour's drive from where you want to go - along with the parking difficulties and fees, breathalysers and general traffic stress .... OR ... you can be 10 minutes away by pleasant ferryboat ride. No matter where you reside about the harbour, there's a nearby service every half hour.

A familiar site on the water are these catamaran "first fleet" ferries, each of which is named after one of the eleven ships in the 1788 "first fleet" of British immigrants. Introduced at the time of the Bicentenary (i.e. 1988) They represent only a small part of the total ferry fleet of course but if you live around the "inner" harbour, east of the bridge, (e.g. Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Mosman, Rose Bay, Milson's Point, Rushcutter's Bay, Double Bay, Taronga Park) you'll probably be whisked around on one of these more often than by any other type. They are fast, meticulously maintained, comfortable and offer both inside and outdoor seating. I simply love travelling on them.
