KMF day 2
Back at the festival earlier than needed, a good chance to just mill about and catch up with a few seldom seen folk.
Then I was presenting the Lose selection (still pretty sure this should be Loss, but hey, I'm not the Artistic Director). Two wonderful films to open. Obviously I felt an affinity to the climbers of Peurto Rico as they helped rebuild their community after Hurricane Irma. And then Focus, the story of Steve Bate as he comes to terms with the impending loss of his sight. Words like hero and inspirational and courage are thrown around far far too easily. And Steve makes it clear in the film he's not seeking to be any of them, which just serves to cement in place how right these words are to describe him. Since his vision has nearly completely gone he's solo climbed the big wall of El Capitan in Yosemite, become a world record holder and paralympiam gold medal winner and won one of the toughest bike rides in the world - across lapland at -32°C in the dark.
Steve admits there have been times when he thought death would be better - but now he's all about what he can still achieve, not what he's lost. The courage to be an inspirational hero, I'm really really looking forward to meeting him tomorrow.
Our last film about the 'beautiful losers' of cycling, those who work for the team but never for the podium was probably good if you're a cycling anorak, but at 77 minutes it felt about 65minutes too long.
I thought it would be another festival shot, but the sunset made me pull over and stop and stare. Eventually I thought to take a few shots and thus I present you this.
