Clutter

As I've said on here quite recently, you can't tell people what to do, not unless it's something they're already inclined towards and just need a nudge. But sometimes you can inspire people.

I would never have taken up yoga - to the limited extent that I have - if my friend Chris wasn't so committed to it (and looking so well on it). And my brother's commitment to decluttering his life led me to think about that, too.

But, ultimately, the decluttering was never going to happen. For a start, my house contains loads of books, CDs, and DVDs (although I rarely buy the last of these nowadays), but mostly it's full of mementos of places I've been or knick-knacks that have caught my eye. They all mean something to me, albeit to varying degrees, and I like having them around. Like this mug that we bought in Malmö at the weekend.

Recently, my friends, Nigel and Janet, retired from their jobs and bought an RV to travel in. Originally, they were going to sell their house but when they decided to rent it out instead, they still went ahead and donated, sold, or dumped all of their possessions that weren't going with them on their travels.

Again, this example of someone's behaviour led me to think about doing that myself but, on reflection, if the Minx and I ever went travelling like that, I'd just put my stuff into storage. I'm totally at one with my clutter.
