If you can't beat them...

Red Squirrel.

There are many days when I know there has been a squirrel in the garden as the nuts have gone.  Recently the nuts have gone but I haven't managed to see the squirrel.

Today I worked out why.  I have been putting nuts out and assuming that somewhere during the day they will visit to see if there are any.  Over the last few days I have realised one must sit up in a tree with a telescope and watch for me putting the nuts out!  Within half an hour they (it? rarely have we seen more than one at a time) have cleared the 10 I put in the feeder the 3 from the bird table, one from the (human) table and one from the bird bath.  These are the places I usually put them.

Today soon after feeding time I glanced out of the window and saw a Wood Pigeon on the bird table.  The thought passed through my mind that I would know if the squirrel appeared as I have seen one push the pigeon off the table.  Just then the pigeon was startled.  Sure enough it was the squirrel.

The shot is it collecting the hazel nut from the garden table.
