Almost Gone
The Hunterston deep water Iron Ore Terminal on the Clyde at Fairlie in Ayrshire was built in 1979 to replace General Terminus Quay, in the centre of Glasgow. Now it’s under demolition.
When the Ravenscraig steel works at Motherwell closed in 1992 Hunterston transferred from iron ore to coal used for power generation.
The two main customers were Drax in Yorkshire and Longannet in Fife. The closure of Longannet in 2016 marked the deathknell for Hunterston.
Today the demolition of the site is well advanced.
What a waste!
