Boys Night Out at the La Capannina Restaurant in Viano.  I had promised to bring Ermanno a few old bottles of wine that my father-in-law had gifted me. He decanted them in the afternoon for us.  Black truffles on the appetizer, white truffles on the baked watercress dish, an iron skillet served steak drowned in balsamic vinegar, balsamic vinegar ice cream topped with gianduia chocolate, almond brittle to taste with the whiskies.... TOP!!!! 

Not to miss the extras!!!

The wine had aged in an earthen caveau and the labels have mostly disintegrated in the humid environment over the years.  The first was either a Barbera or Nebbiolo.  Ermanno who has a certain experience estimated that it could easily have been 50 years old and was in just superb condition!!! The second was a Freisa as could be read on the label - not the best wine to age as it is much lighter on tannins.  It had a very mature strawberry taste but still quite lively and punchy and probably more than 30 years.  Incredible experience!
