St. Andrew's Day

Just wanted a topical blip for 30th November. So here's our school Saltire!

The 'spire' on the Auld Hoose of Robert Gordon's College is identical to the one on the Tolbooth steeple which is part of the Town House and Sheriff Court on Union Street. The only difference is the arches on the Tolbooth spire are blind (boarded not glazed).

The weird bit of history is that both the Auld Hoose and the Tolbooth housed troops of the Duke of Cumberland in 1745 when he was chasing the Jacobites in the North-east heading eventually to Culloden and beyond.

Maybe he wanted to get in-'spired'.

There's a similar spire on an old building on Charlotte Street which used to be a Free Church school but became a Practising or Demonstration School.

I've tried to track down the architect but it could well have been different architects who used a common design at that time.

Recently our spire has sported a traffic cone! (Sixth year prankster - best not mentioned really!)
