The Great Allotment
My friend and next-door neighbour, CD, took MrsK and myself to the hundred-acre wood he manages for his son. It was a mono-culture conifer plantation when his son bought it twenty years ago. The timber was felled and sold, and is gradually being re-planted with mixed conifers and native broad-leaf trees. It is enclosed within dry-stone walls, has tarns, rocky outcrops, extensive views, and about ten acres of it have been designated a SSSI by Natural England. We spent three enjoyable hours exploring it. There is a bridleway running through it which used to be part of the Cumbria Coastal Path, but that has now been re-routed.
The 'official' name of the wood is The Great Allotment, a name which almost certainly dates back to the days before it was ever a wood.
