Windermere Viewing Station
My Tuesday "run" walking colleagues did not turn up today so I walked gingerly on my own for about 3k on a round trip to this old viewing station to check out some local history. It was built in 1790 and described in the 1794 edition of, possibly the first guidebook to The Lakes, written by Thomas West to encourage visitors to this "barren and wild" place.. There were 21 viewing stations all over the Lakes. This is one of five on Windermere. It was rescued and made safe by The National Trust about 15 years ago. It was a very grey day. We were lucky to get out and back before rain started. Storm Diana is on its way. Could be hunkered up indoors for a few days
