Packhorse Hut
We were up at Packhorse Hut by 10am this morning, to try and beat the forecast blustery nor'westerly wind. The view across Lyttelton Harbour was a bit hazy but none the less spectacular.
Packhorse is now a nine-bunk hut, but was built in 1914 as part of Harry Ell's vision of a series of tea houses for travellers from Christchurch to Akaroa across the Port Hills. It is built of quarried volcanic stone, to harmonise with the surroundings.
I like this side of the hut, as it shows the hitching post, used for horses in bygone years.
