St John's Grammar School

St John's Grammar School

I have had my eye on this wonderful old building for some time, waiting to blip it. Went there yesterday, but it had cars all around it being a secondary private school, so I made this a weekend blip. Went there early today to get the angle of lighting I wanted on one end of the building, did a half dozen shots from different angles and that was it. Looks more scholastic in LARGE.

In 1877 a building was erected on this property to be used as the Belair Inebriates Retreat Inc. In 1950s the population of Adelaide grew rapidly and the Church of England decided in the early 1960s that the diocese once more needed its own theological college.

After a fund raising campaign, the new St Barnabas' College was opened in this Belair location in 1965. Then during the 1970s St Barnabas' joined in teaching with the theological colleges of other denominations in Adelaide.

The coeducational Anglican St John's Grammar School was founded in 1958 in Belair, and the Secondary School was set up here in this wonderful old building in 1998, in the former St Barnabas Theological College.
