Dining out: amuse bouche

A Christmas treat was a meal out at Martin Wishart’s restaurant in Leith. it was fantastic, one of the best meals we have experienced.

We caught the bus from the camp site which luckily went all the way to Leith followed by a ten minute walk in the pouring gale blowing rain. We arrived at the restaurant dripping wet, dressed more for a walk on the hills than a smart restaurant. Removing walking shoes, over trousers, hats, scarves the reception from two waiters couldn’t have been better than if we had just stepped from a limousine.

And the evening just got better. Our neighbour cannot tolerate garlic, I forewarned the restaurant but had a niggling concern in case this was overlooked. Worry not, he was exceptionally well looked after. We were half an hour early arriving at 7.00, it was too cold to wander Leith and thrown out about 11.30 pm. The waiter was a hoot when trying to redress us, but we won’t go there.

Anyway by now the rain and wind had cleared off and the midnight bus ride home at the front of the upper deck finished off the evening nicely. No traffic, clear vision looking down (a weird feeling) onto the night life of Edinburgh and only a ten minute walk back to the camp site. Earlier in the evening I had it in mind we would book a taxi home, pleased I didn’t.

All of this was a big deal for the four teuchters from the Isle of Mull, none of whom were disappointed. Apologies to any real teuchters reading this.
